The Microsystem Technology lab (MST) is a part of the department of Signals, Sensors and Systems (S3). Our research is mainly centered around Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) and its applications, with a focus on silicon-based applied sensor and actuator technology. Our research staff has developed a significant number of devices with promising performance. The group fabricates its silicon structures and devices at the KTH microelectronics laboratory, comprising 1200m2 of cleanroom area with all the facilities of small-scale microelectronics and for research on and development of special purpose structures and components in silicon. The group works on applications in the medical field (MedMEMS), the biotechnology field (BioMEMS), optical components (OptoMEMS) and radio frequency signal components (RFMEMS).

PMA is active in the following areas: manufacturing processes, machine and instrument design, structural dynamics, acoustics, CAD/CAM/CIM, robotics, assembly automation, mechatronics, micro- and precision engineering, and metrology. The PMA division work includes original fundamental work as well as successful industry-oriented projects carried out in collaboration with small, medium and large companies and with international organisations like the European Space Agency. An important role of the research activities of the PMA division is based on international collaboration as shown by the participation of the division in more than 40 EC funded projects. KTH is the largest of Sweden’s six universities of technology. It provides one-third of Sweden’s capacity for engineering studies and technical research at post-secondary level. It has nearly 11,000 undergraduate students, 1,400 active postgraduate students and a staff of 3,100 people. KTH conducts top-notch education and research of a broad spectrum – from natural science to all branches of technology. Apart from research performed at our departments, 10 competence centres are housed at KTH. Studies at KTH can lead to a number of degrees – Architect, Master or Bachelor of Science, or Doctor/ licentiate in either science or philosophy. Continuing education is also an important part of our activities.
In the 4M NoE two particular divisions of the Centre are more involved. These are the Industrial Metrology & Optics, and the Micro System Technology divisions.
The Industrial Metrology and Optics group at the department of Production Engineering, covers conventional industrial metrology to optical solutions for surface roughness characterisation and optical metrology in the sub-um to sub-nm range. In particular interferometers and light scattering systems are used for assessment of shape, deformation and roughness. Special emphasis has also been devoted to high speed tracking of um deformations in materials subject to chock waves. Modelling of the interaction between light and complex surfaces is done for understanding the metrological aspects of using light probes as well as for understanding visual appearance attributes originating in sub-um surface features of product surfaces, such as metal and paper. Development of holographic tools for visualisation of virtual 3D objects is another area combining the sub-um holographic resolution with presentation systems for product design. The group collaborates closely with Surface Evaluation Laboratory at Acreo AB, which has Sweden's most advanced facilities for surface characterisation using optical and mechanical probes.
