Metrology applications for quality assurance of rolled steel products

The University of Naples Federico II has provided a consultancy to Ferriere Nord, Stabilimento di Potenza, about the general aspects concerning the metrological problems applied to the micro features of their steel products.

Ferriere Nord is a producer of steel products obtained by plastic deformation processes, mainly rolling. Ferriere Nord has had long term collaborations with the University of Naples Federico II to which it recently submitted a technological enquiry regarding the establishment of appropriate metrology procedure for the characterization of micro features in its products by taking into account the national standards on steel products for the construction industry.

The following outcome was obtained:

Development of touch probe and/or laser based procedures to verify the client required micro feature 3D geometrical characterization with the aim to reduce testing time and cost.

Demonstration of the feasibility of the procedures experimentally carried out at the laboratories of both the University of Naples Federico II and Ferriere Nord, Stabilimento di Potenza.

The University of Naples Federico II will continue to collaborate with Ferriere Nord on this application in order to ensure the scientific and technical support for the establishment of appropriate metrology procedure for the characterization of micro features in its products by taking into account the national standards on steel products for the construction industry.
