Metrology application for quality assurance of coated steel products

The University of Naples Federico II has provided a consultancy to Ferrosud 2 about the general aspects concerning the metrological problems in the characterisation of coatings of steel structures of different geometry within their fabrication range.

Ferrosud 2 is a SME fabricating structures for the construction industry. Ferrosud 2 has had long term collaborations with the University of Naples Federico II to which it recently submitted a technological enquiry regarding the establishment of appropriate metrology procedure for the characterization of coatings of metal structures of diverse geometry by taking into account the national standards for the construction industry.

The following outcome was obtained:

Development of metrological characterisation procedures for coating on steel structures, with particular attention to micro feature characterisation, by taking into account the requirements of the national standard.

Experimental demonstrations of the feasibility and efficiency of the destructive and nondestructive characterisation procedures carried out at the laboratories of the University of Naples Federico II.

The University of Naples Federico II will continue to collaborate with Ferrosud 2 on this application area in order to ensure the scientific and technical support for the establishment of appropriate metrology procedures for the characterization of coatings of metal structures of diverse geometry by taking into account the national standards for the construction industry.
