Metrology application for quality assurance of coated steel products

Ferrosud 2 is a SME fabricating structures for the construction industry. Ferrosud 2 has had long term collaborations with the University of Naples Federico II to which it recently submitted a technological enquiry regarding the establishment of appropriate metrology procedures for the characteization of coatings of metal structures of diverse geometry by taking into account the national standards for the construction industry.

Consultancy was given by the University of Naples Federico II to the Ferrosud 2 company about the general aspects concerning the metrological problems in the characterisation of coatings of steel structures of different geometry within their fabrication. The development of metrological characterisation procedures for coating on steel structures, with particular attention to micro feature characterisation, was proposed by taking into account the requirements of the national standard. Experimental demonstrations of the feasibility and efficiency of the destructive and nondestructive characterisation procedures will be carried out. The collaboration has already been started on the basis of a 10 days consultancy activity and is expected to be completed by september 30, 2006.
