Metrology applications for quality assurance of rolled and drawn steel products

IMI Sud is a producer of steel products obtained by plastic deformation processes, mainly rolling and drawing. IMI Sud has had long term collaborations with the University of Naples Federico II to which it recently submitted a technological enquiry regarding the establishment of appropriate metrology procedure for the characterization of micro features in its products by taking into account the national standards on steel products for the construction industry.

Consultancy was given by the University of Naples Federico II to the IMI Sud company about the general aspects concerning the metrological problems applied to the micro features of their steel products. The development of touch probe and/or laser based procedures was proposed to verify the client required micro feature 3D geometrical characterization with the aim to reduce testing time and cost. Demonstration of the feasibility of the procedures will be experimentally carried out. The collaboration has already been started on the basis of a 10 days consultancy activity and is expected to be completed by september 30, 2006.
